By this point, most everyone has heard about the health benefits of tea.

But what about slim tea and detox tea? Can tea really help you lose weight?

More importantly, do they actually work? Does detox tea work?

Read on to find out how different kinds of teas can help you get healthier and feel great… While also helping you shed those extra pounds.

Slim Tea: What is it, and How Does it Work?

The makers of slimming teas claim they can make you lose weight faster when you drink them regularly.

Some of them have green tea as their main ingredient while others are herbal tea and herbs for weight loss. While losing weight in a healthy way also requires exercise and a balanced diet, slim teas take it up a notch.

Drinking a slim tea on a regular basis helps you shed pounds in the following ways:

Boosts your metabolism
  • Boosts metabolism

Slim teas have healthy amounts of caffeine which naturally boost the drinker’s metabolism

Curbs your appetite
  • Curbs your appetite

Certain slim teas such as green tea naturally suppress appetite by jumpstarting the body’s norepinephrine and dopamine

Acts as a diuretic or laxative to flush toxins from your body
  • Natural diuretic or laxative to flush toxins from the body

Herbal teas that contain ingredients such as dandelion and aloe may function like a natural laxative. Note that weight loss from diuretics don’t actually constitute weight loss and instead flush waste from the body.

Many say the effects of slim teas are much gentler than diet pills while providing very similar benefits.

So let’s take a look at the different kinds of products and ingredients out there. We’ll also examine how they can rev up your weight loss plan.

Best Detox Tea for Weight Loss

Can a special tea help you to lose weight?

You can find these detox and weight loss teas sold as slimming tea, slim tea, or natural slim. The makers claim they have special natural ingredients and Chinese herbs for weight loss.

Places to find these teas:

  • health food stores
  • Asian grocery stores
  • online
  • in the aisle of your local supermarket


So, what does detox tea do?

These slimming and detox teas for weight loss tend to contain plenty of caffeine, plus herbs that function as powerful laxatives.

Some may also contain diuretic herbs, which flush your system and purge water weight. The caffeine and herbs also ease and speed up your digestion.

You’ll likely notice some slight weight loss right away.

But, don’t overdo it.

Prolonged use of even the mildest laxatives for weight control puts you at risk of dehydration and malnutrition. Moreover, your body can become dependent on laxatives for normal elimination.

Always take care with diuretics and laxatives… And with any other major changes to your diet. Even the most beneficial herbs and diet tea options can have unwanted side effects when taken in large amounts.

Now, let’s discuss the most common ingredients you’ll find in teas and how they can support fat burning.

Does Slim Tea Work?

Of course, weight loss plans are highly personal and not everything works for everyone.

Yet some people have achieved fantastic results with slim teas.

Take Samantha Reese, for example. Redbook reports she’d always struggled with her weight. But when she had her first child as a teenager, it got out of control.

By the time she was 18, she’d packed nearly 210 pounds on her petite, 5’1″ frame.

This made her feel depressed, and the more depressed she got, the more she ate.

Finally, she got fed up and cut the fast food and sweets.

But the pounds still weren’t coming off fast enough. Then she started drinking plain green tea instead of her usual five cups of milky, sugar-laden tea. In fact, she drank a cup of green tea every hour during the day for a total of 9 cups a day.

The results were dramatic. In just four weeks, she’d lost nearly 15 pounds.

“Obviously I’d been eating well and cutting out my milky teas had probably helped,” she said. “But my metabolism must have sped up too and I was certainly snacking less. I was amazed.”

A year and 3,000 cups of green tea later, she weighs a svelte 130 pounds.

Fat Burners

Some teas are advertised as aiding weight loss because they contain ingredients that supposedly help to burn fat faster.

But do they?

The answer is yes.

BUT, you also have to do some of the work.

Drinking slim tea does help burn fat faster. But, you still need to exercise more and eat less.

Cinnamon, lemon, aloe, ginger, and green tea are five top ingredients for burning fat.


Green Tea

This delicious, refreshing tea also contains EGCG.

Another study shows that green tea increases the body’s ability to burn fat during exercise.

Test subjects taking green tea capsules lost 1.63% more body fat than the placebo group, while doing comparable amounts of exercise.

This does show that green tea helps the body to burn fat faster during exercise.

It should be noted that the test subjects added three hours of vigorous cycling to an already active week. They also drank seven cups of green tea a day.

Even without all these healthful herbs, drinking tea instead of soda or juice is bound to slim you down.


Researchers at University of Michigan have found that a chemical in cinnamon, cinnamaldehyde, appears to protect mice from obesity.

The research showed that cinnamaldehyde causes fat cells to start burning energy.

This occurs through a process called thermogenesis.

In addition, they found that cinnamaldehyde has the same effect on human fat cells.

Does that mean that drinking tea with cinnamon will make you lose weight? Is tea with cinnamon a slim tea?

Some swear by it, but we need more research on how much we’d need to drink.

Dandelions made Prevention‘s list of herbs and spices for weight loss with good reason.

Plus it has iron, potassium, and vitamins A, C, and E. Plus, it aids digestion and is a diuretic that flushes out water weight and toxins.

Green Tea and Garcinia Cambogia

Some also say they get great fat burning results with green tea and Garcinia Cambogia.

This extract comes from the rind of a tamarind fruit from India and Southeast Asia.

It became all the rage when Dr. Oz called it the “holy grail” of all-natural weight loss aids back in  2012.

White Tea

A 2009 study from the Journal Nutrition & Metabolism found white tea and white tea extract helps block fatty tissue from building up while breaking down fat cells.

So, what are the magic ingredients?

It’s the antioxidants, scientists say.

Especially one called Epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG for short. As Readers Digest explains, white tea is the least processed — and hence the purest — kind of tea.

Normally, our bodies store extra energy from the food we eat as fat.

These fat cells are called adipocytes. But the high levels of polyphenols found in teas (and also in dark berries and citrus fruits) slows down this process while dissolving the fat cells we already have.

White tea and green tea aren’t the only sources of fat-melting polyphenols.

A 2008 study from Japan also found this beneficial antioxidant in lemons.

But that’s not all. When mice were fed a high-fat diet with lemon, it boosted their metabolism and lessened their weight gain. The researchers wrote the lemon polyphenols prompted the liver to produce fat-blocking enzymes.

But, here’s the thing.

You don’t get these benefits by drinking lemon water.

You need to grate the rind or use a product that contains grated lemon rind. Luckily, lemon zest is delicious in tea, on fish or chicken, and with fresh veggies sauteed in olive oil. Lemon rind’s also loaded with vitamin C, and although the science isn’t in, lack of vitamin C is linked to obesity.

Now, here’s one you can get really excited about.

Ginger has many scientifically proven health benefits — and studies back this up.

A recent review of clinical trials published in The Annals of the New York Academy of Science suggests that consuming food amounts of ginger can have a positive effect on obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Ginger isn’t a miracle cure, and it won’t make you skinny overnight. But, unless you’re pregnant, researchers agree, drinking tea with ginger is good for you. In addition, ginger can give your food an extra punch of flavor without adding sugar or salt.

Aloe Vera

A 2008 study published in Obesity Research & Clinical Practice showed that feeding aloe vera gel to rats with type II diabetes improved their blood sugar levels and decreased their abdominal fat. A 2013 study published in Nutrition Journal suggested similar benefits for humans.

Does this mean that eating or drinking aloe vera will make you lose weight?  Is aloe vera tea a slim tea? Although researchers have only observed the effects in diabetic rats and humans, the test results look promising.

In addition, many health and fitness sites recommend ginger and aloe vera tea for cleansing and weight loss.

The Best Fat Burner? What about the Best Fat Burner for Women?

The best fat burner is exercise, of course. However, slimming and detox teas can give your efforts a boost.

Eat This, Not That — a top health, fitness, and weight loss blog — lists the following as their best teas for weight loss.

  • Green tea and oolong tea for blasting fat.
  • Mint tea for staving off food cravings.
  • Rooibos tea to stave off hunger and reduce stress.
  • White tea to block fat cells from forming.

These slim teas work for both men and women.

What Do Detox Teas Do?

A visit to the tea aisle will give you a dizzying array of different kinds of tea marked “detox.”

The problem is, the word itself has no one meaning.

To some, the term means cleansing the body from toxins like alcohol, caffeine, or sugar.

Others see “detox” as returning to healthy habits or aligning your habits with different practices like Chinese or Ayurvedic medicine.

Cleansing Teas

The truth is, we don’t normally need special drinks to cleanse ourselves.

Our digestive systems do a great job of ridding our bodies of impurities. Still, after weeks, months, or years of scarfing down junk food, drinking detox tea feels great.

Aside from the many weight loss benefits we’ve talked about here, drinking tea is just plain good for you. For starters, it’s not loaded with sugar and chemicals like a lot of the stuff we drink.

In addition, it’s mostly water – which our bodies crave.

Both slim teas and detox teas both cleanse your system by supporting your body’s natural healing abilities. Certain ingredients like chamomile and ginger gently aid digestion, while others flush toxins out more quickly.

Ayurvedic and Other Medicinal Systems

Detox teas marked “Ayurvedic Blend” contain herbs used in Ayurveda, the traditional medicine system of India.

Other detox teas are based on the principles of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and other systems.

Although both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine have many adherents around the world, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) state that more research needs to be done to determine these systems’ effectiveness. Still, many holistic practitioners and patients swear by these types of medicine.

Most studies report “encouraging results,” but they also agree that we need more, “suitable modern science methods/techniques to unravel the true therapeutic role of Ayurvedic drugs.” Also, be aware that the claims made for herbs and supplements are not regulated by the FDA.

The Real Health Benefits of Tea

Even without its fat-busting properties, tea has a number of health benefits.

For those with sensitivities, it has less caffeine than coffee.

In addition, unsweetened tea has no calories.

Tea is also rich in antioxidants, which promote good heart health as well as weight loss. While slim tea alone won’t do much in terms of losing weight, it gives your diet and exercise routine the major boost you need.
